'Mandela' movie features three deeply moving moments

As Mandela is laid to rest this weekend, the film, based on his autobiography, is beginning to draw more attention. It will be released in most cities Christmas Day. Star Idris Elba received a Golden Globe nomination on Thursday, and has been praised for his towering performance.
It'd be impossible to include every highlight from Mandela's 95 years in one film, but the new movie manages to feature some poignant events. Here are just a few.
Order in the court
Two courtroom scenes are especially moving. In one, Mandela is a young lawyer, defending a black maid whose employer has accused her of theft. The white woman on the stand won't speak to Mandela as he attempts to question her, and the white judge informs her she can relay her questions through him. It's just another reminder of the degradation blacks faced under apartheid. But the more famous courtroom scene is when Mandela himself is on trial. In a famous three-hour speech (not depicted in full, of course), Mandela even offers up his life, against his lawyers' wishes. He has fought, he notes, not just against white domination, but against black domination as well, seeking equality for all. "It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve," he tells the court. "But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."

Nelson Mandela (Idris Elba) clutches the hands of his wife Winnie (Naomie Harris) as he learns he won't be executed.
Long pants victoryWhen Mandela and fellow members of the African National Congress are imprisoned at South Africa's notorious Robben Island, only Ahmed Kathrada, who is of Indian heritage (and thus has lighter skin) is given long trousers and socks. The others, because of their race, are tossed pairs of shorts instead (and no socks). "Well, Kathy, it looks like you will have to be the daddy," Mandela cracks to Kathrada. But jokes aside, he knows that winning long pants has to be the first step to gaining some form of control even behind bars. And when that day eventually comes and the guards hand out long pants to all, the smile on his face is as bright as the sun.

In Robben Island prison, only inmates with light skin were given long trousers and socks, while those with dark skin were only allowed to wear shorts. Mandela would tackle that injustice as he did all others, and he would win.
Free at lastMandela's prison cell was tiny and damp. He and the others spent their days breaking rocks into gravel in South Africa's blazing sun, and at first he was allowed only one heavily censored letter from home every six months. His mother dies, his son dies, and he's not allowed to attend their funerals. The indignities go on and on, and watching them onscreen is a reminder of how long Mandela endured. His freedom comes slowly and in stages, and those scenes are exhilarating. And when he is elected his country's president in 1994, he walks down a hallway of white South African military leaders and each one snaps to attention with a crisp salute. It's a moment that had to have shocked even Mandela himself.

BODE GEORGE NO MORE AN EXCONVICT

Two days after former President Olusegun Obasanjo accused President Goodluck Jonathan of condoning corruption, a panel of judges at the Supreme Court of Nigeria today quashed the conviction handed Bode George a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain earlier jailed for corruption by a Lagos High Court.
The court discharged and acquitted Mr. George claiming that prosecutors at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had no evidence of Mr. George's intention to commit fraud at the Nigeria Port Authority (NPA) where as chairman of the NPA board he was caught presiding over a contract bazaar the bled the nation of Nigeria.
A panel of judges headed by a controversial judge, John Afolabi Fabiyi JSC, ruled that the charges of "contract splitting" upon which Mr. George was convicted is unknown to law.
The pattern of today's quashing of George's conviction was similar to that of a Lagos Court of Appeal ruling which similarly quashed a death sentence conviction of Major Hamza Al Mustapha's for the murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola in 1996. In Lagos, a panel of Court of Appeal cleared former Chief Security Officer of late maximum dictator, Sanni Abacha Mustapha of murder charges under controversial circumstances. Al Mustapha later wrote a letter thanking President Jonathan for arranging his judicial pardon.
Al Mustapha case was handled by the same lawyer, former president of the Nigeria Bar Association , Joseph B Daudu was Al Mustapha's lawyer in the Lagos case. Mr. Daudu, a senior advocate of Nigeria, also played a lead role in securing Mr. George's freedom today.
Since leaving prison a few years ago, Mr. George had been closely linked to President Jonathan, even sometimes openly bragging that his conviction will be upturned

ASUU DARES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AS DEADLINE EXPIRES

The latest ASUU Strike news update is that members of ASUU have vowed to continue the ongoing strike. The federal Government has earlier threatened to sack all lecturers who refused to resume on 4th December 2013. The ultimatum was later shifted to 9th December, 2013.
The striking lecturers have now said they are unmoved by this empty threat and vow to continue the strike. There are also reports in some quarters that FG is under pressure to rescind the sack threat.

ASUU Strike Update
Striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Sunday vowed  not to resume work despite the federal government’s  ultimatum that they should do so by today or risk losing their jobs.
The federal government had last week shifted the deadline for the resumption of the teachers, who have been on strike since July from last Wednesday to today.
However,  the union has remained adamant, insisting that its members would not go back to work, despite the threat as the government is not towing the line that would resolve the crisis.
The union again added that it would not resume work until its demands as agreed with President Goodluck Jonathan at the November 4 meeting are all met.

ENTERTAINMENT WORLD PLAYS TRIBUTE

The news of the death of Nelson Mandela broke during a royal gala screening of the biographical film Long Walk to Freedom in London.
The screening was attended by Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, as well as two of Mandela’s daughters.
Idris Elba, who plays the former leader in the film, called it an “honour to step into the shoes of Nelson Mandela”.
Prince William, who attended the screening, said the news was “extremely sad and tragic”.
The film is based on Mandela’s autobiography, published in 1995, and recounts his life from his childhood, through his 27 years behind bars, mostly in Robben Island prison, to becoming South Africa’s first black president in 1994.
Two of Mandela’s daughters — Zindzi and Zenani — were at the screening at the Odeon in Leicester Square when they were told of the death of their father.
Although they left the cinema, they insisted that the film continue. Producer Anant Singh, who Mandela personally awarded the book rights to, announced the death at the end of the screening, and asked for a moment of silence.
British actor Elba later said: “What an honour it was to step into the shoes of Nelson Mandela and portray a man who defied odds, broke down barriers, and
championed human rights before the eyes of the world. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.” Also at the screening was Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, whose film company is behind the movie. “We count ourselves unspeakably fortunate to have been immersed in Nelson Mandela’s story and legacy,” he said.

HERE AT MUCHIMEDIA WE SAY FAREWELL MADIBA...
